Jenny Zeller, the Visual Art Coordinator at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest was our guest this week, and she will introduced us to Ashley Peevor, who is in the middle of a Residency at Bernheim. Jenny Zeller was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky and earned an Arts Administration degree from University of Kentucky in 1995.

Jenny is currently working with the Louisville Photo Biennial, helping to bring arts education to underserved communities in the Louisville Metro area. In 2017 she was awarded an Artist Professional Development Grant from the Great Meadows Foundation and a Regional Artist in Residence at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest.

In July 2017, Jenny stepped into the role of Visual Arts Coordinator at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest.

Ashley Peevor, a qualified fashion designer who studied fine art at Arts University Bournemouth. In recent years, his costumes have been showcased at festivals and venues across the UK, including the artist-led Bristol Biennial in 2014. He is perhaps best known for the creation of his living costumes, fondly referred to as "Grass men". Part-sculpture and part-performance, Grass men is a body of work that involves carefully crafted living costumes made from grass, flowers, and other flora.

Bernheim received a Regional Imagine Greater Louisville (IGL) 2020 grant for the Seeds of CONNECTion! Project.

LVA's Artebella On The Radio 8.2.18

Artist Matthew Mazzota and Architect John David Wagner are developing a project in the California neighborhood on the west side of Louisville, and they came on the August 2 LVA's Artebella On The Radio to talk about it. Listen to Keith Waits talk to artists every Thursday at 10am on WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com.

Matthew Mazzotta works at the intersection of art, activism, and urbanism, focusing on the power of the built environment to shape our relationships and experiences. His community-specific public projects integrate new forms of civic participation and social engagement into the built environment and reveal how the spaces we travel through and spend our time living within have the potential to become distinct sites for intimate, radical, and meaningful exchanges. Through his process, each project starts by creating temporary public spaces for listening – ‘Outdoor Living Room’ - as a way capture voices from local people that might not attend more formal meetings. Stemming from this approach are experiences that involve people from a range of backgrounds working together to create new models of living that contribute to local culture beyond the economic realm. Mazzotta received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a Masters of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Program in Art, Culture and Technology, and is a Loeb Fellow of Harvard University. 

John David Wagner is a Master of Architecture student at Harvard Graduate School of Design. His area of interest is in the emerging methods of alternative architectural practice and collaborative artistic engagement in the civic realm. Working with cities such as Fitchburg, MA, Charlotte, NC, and Louisville, KY, his studies and professional practice address art, public space, and community empowerment.

"We have been working closely in the California neighborhood with residents, local artists, and the Metro Louisville government for 1.5 years. They have been on the ground in Louisville for the summer organizing community design meetings and culminating our efforts in a final design to be debuted in mid-2019. The project focus is on food and community space. With a network of partners, we envision a new community food ecosystem, providing affordable meals at a constellation of pop-up restaurants. At the project's focal point will be an installation near several new developments at 18th and Broadway. Here, we are interested in providing a unique new space in California reflective of the neighborhood culture and experience."  - Matthew Mazzotta & John David Wagner

2017 The Future Is Now exhibit opening.

The Future Is Now exhibit opens tonight at 849 Gallery. 5-7pm. This is an annual collaboration between LVA and KyCAD in which students are mentored by adult artists.

The world premiere of Better Start Running, a film shot in Kentucky starring Alex Sharp, Annaleigh Tipton, Maria Bello, & Jeremy Irons will close the 2018 Flyover Film Festival at the Brown Theatre.

There is theatre happening theatre on the West Side of Louisville: The Ain't I A Woman Playfest opens tonight for three performances ONLY. Admission is Free.

LVA's Artebella On The Radio 7.26.18

We began this week's show with the announcement from WXOX Station Manager Sharon Scott and outgoing LVA Outreach Director Ehren Reed that this design by Wilfred Seig III won the selection for a mural on WXOX's east facing wall! Seig will begin the mural soon, and expects to be finished by the end of August.

Then incoming LVA Outreach Program Manager Katy Delahanty, Portland studio artist, and board member for the Portland Museum, joined us to talk about her new job with LVA, why the Portland neighborhood is important to the city. She was joined by fellow Portland artist Bryan K. Holden to discuss The Future Is Now mentorship program that is a collaboration with LVA and KyCAD. he was paired with Ballard HS student Marc Nadmid, who was also in the studio with us.

The Future Is Now exhibit of opens Friday, July 27 and runs through August 7 at KyCAD's 849 Gallery, with a reception July 27 from 5-7pm. Tune in WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com every Thursday at 10:00am for the live broadcast of LVA's Artebella On The Radio.

Jordan Clark, Lee Mai, & Abbie Springer of Cirque Louis were with us in the studio July 19. They will be performing at iroquois Amphitheatre on July 20 & 21 as a part of the Amphitheatre's 80th Birthday Celebration! Jordan Clark was first taken to see the circus by his grandparents. From there, a fascination of the circus and its characters began to grow. The circus was a place where Jordan’s childlike imagination could manifest into a tangible experience. After training on his own in high school, Jordan began his formal circus training in 2006 at the National Circus School of Montreal’s summer program. He was later accepted into the school’s prestigious college program where he completed his training in 2012. Jordan has performed his hand-balancing act in over 20 countries as well as at sea.

Lee Mai is a Juggler and circus enthusiast who is one of CirqueLouis’ most consummate and active performers. He is a regular fixture at CirqueLouis’ city wide events and productions, playing a Vaudeville star in Bootleg “Untapped” (2015) and Puck in “A Midsummer Night’s Circus” (2016) and major roles in Pinocchio (2016), East of the Sun (2017), and Kaleidoscope (2017). In addition to performing, Lee is also an instructor for CirqueLouis’ educational outreach and Social Circus program. Beyond circus, Lee enjoys food, good conversation, kindness, and cheesy sci-fi.

Abbie Springer grew up in Kansas City, Mo, but moved to Louisville to compete with the nationally ranked University of Louisville cheerleading squad and in 2009, she began her circus arts training. Abbie has trained extensively in doubles acts and apparatus (Acro, Adagio, Trapeze, Chandelyra, and Sphere). She has trained on Silks, Aerial Rope, Lyra and completed her instructional training through NECCA (New England Center for Circus Arts). Abbie has performed in CirqueLouis’ previous productions of Bootleg “Untapped” (2015), A Midsummer Night’s Circus (2016), Pinocchio (2016), East of the Sun (2017), and Kaleidoscope (2017).

Zoë Peterson is a student at Atherton High School and the Commonwealth Theatre Center, where she has acted, written, and directed. She is also involved with the Derby City Playwrights, from which has sprung her first full length play, “Shot In The Dark”, which will be presented during the Louisville Fringe Festival, Friday, July 13 at 7pm, Saturday, July 14 at 10pm and Friday, Feb. 20 at 7pm, all times at Four Pegs.

Megg Ward is a Louisville native who studied Theatre Arts, Humanities, Communicating History at University of Louisville & Shakespeare and Creativity at Shakespeare Institute. She will be premiering her new play, “If”, at the LFF on Sunday, February 15 at 10pm at Four Pegs.

Jon Becraft is a theatre artist active with Kentucky Shakespeare, The Bard’s Town, and others, and he is the co-founder of Baby Horse Theatre and the LWW. Baby Horse will be presenting “Robothello” on Saturday, February 14 at 7pm at the Monnik Beer Co. and Saturday, February 21 at 10pm at both at Four Pegs.

Butterflies and Flowers at St. Vincent de Paul

This was a project centered around the idea of metamorphosis. Waking up from cocoons and actualizing into a butterfly. The children had a template of a butterfly and cut the remaining decorative paper into designs to accentuate their wings and beauty.

Ephemeral and delicate flowers made from tissue paper and pipe cleaners. Each child followed step-by-step instructions to create these large magnolia inspired colorful flowers. Each flower then was accompanied by a friendly bug that each child drew, cut and pasted.

Art in Nature at Yew Dell - Year 2, Week 1, Day 4

At Yew Dell and Louisville Visual Art’s summer camp today, the artists beat the rain while working on gourds and mashing beets together to make paint. We can't wait for week 2 next month.

The Future Is Now 2018: Month 1

The Future Is Now is a mentorship program that matches high school students with professional local artists. We are excited to continue our partnership with The Kentucky College of Art + Design!

Over the course of this program, each student/mentor team works towards creating individual and collaborative pieces for an exhibition showcasing their work.

The 2018 exhibition will be held on Friday, July 27 from 5-7 p.m. at the 849 Gallery. Please join us!

Summer Camps, Week Three: Painting Lab

Painting Lab students worked with a variety of media including watercolor, acrylic paint, and even house paint! Instructor Jackie taught this group to make geli prints, including mono prints.

Simple compositions lead to experimentation with various approaches to painting, and students experimented with non-traditional techniques. Creations came to life with quality materials and a little imagination!

Art in Nature at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens - Year 2, Week 1, Day 2

Yew Dell and Louisville Visual Art’s summer camp was such a success last year that we expanded this year! During the first days, the artists worked on 3-D birds, watercolors, papier-mache and journals. Plus, they loved going on scavenger hunts around the gardens!
