Breeders' Cup 2018 Art Voting Contest
At Downs After Dark - Art of the Horse at Churchill Downs, finalists for the Official Artist of the 2018 Breeders' Cup displayed their art, giving racing fans chances to see their choices close-up.
LVA board member Meredith Harber was interviewed about LVA and all the amazing artists we get to work with.

Summer Camps, Week Two (Part Three)
LVA's Creature Feature summer camp also takes group walking tours to the nearby Clifton Gardens for inspiration to produce nature inspired works of art — a perfect fit for students wishing to learn new skills or those simply wanting to try new techniques.
A pair of students shared their art with residents of the Nazareth Home across the street and made new friends!

Creature Feature is the class for children who like to experiment with multiple media, such as paint, plaster, gauze and air-drying clay!
Students incorporate both 2D and 3D techniques, utilizing a variety of provided materials along with found objects to create one-of-a-kind works of art.
Students draw, paint and sculpt to create a whimsical animal bust to hang on their wall!

Music Video Features LVA
Louisville band Annapurna have debuted their video for the song "Henna". The video was filmed at LVA, showcasing members of our neighbors Cirque Louis, as well as at Lydia House and in a band member's garage. Louisville Public Media station WFPK debuted the song on the radio and wrote about it.

An Appreciation: Ehren Reed, LVA Outreach Program Manager, 2014-2018

I’m supposed to write about Ehren Reed, but remembering the old maxim, “A picture is worth a thousand words," I would begin with this photograph. Taken at an event celebrating the installation of murals painted by students from four different schools* and installed on the Alltrade Building on Barrett Avenue near East Broadway, it exemplifies so much of what made Ehren so valuable to Louisville Visual Art.
As an art educator, Ehren brought an invaluable mix of professionalism, dedication, creativity, and joy in her work that stands as an example to any individual steeping into that arena. Her enthusiasm never flagged in the face of the formidable challenges of limited budgets, tight schedule, and the reality that there was never enough time to do everything asked of her and Louisville Visual Art. Community partners who worked with her were always eager to return, and you would hard pressed to find a sour note from any of her collaborators, most especially her fellow staff members at LVA. She will be sorely missed.
So it is important to note that Ehren is moving on to new challenges, but still working within the Louisville arts community that she has been wholeheartedly committed to since she moved back from San Francisco in 2013. LVA is proud of her accomplishments on our behalf, and excited about what happens next.

Ehren Reed grew up near Chicago and graduated with a BA in Latin American Studies from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. In late 2013, she moved to Louisville from San Francisco, where she had lived for 14 years and where she received a BFA with High Distinction in Painting & Drawing from the California College of the Arts. As LVA’s Outreach Programs Manager, she continued her work as a community-based art educator, working with youth in a variety of visual art programs. Ehren’s latest personal artwork relies upon found photography which she reinterprets and transforms through stitching and embroidery. This unique blend of traditional craft and contemporary media investigates ideas of memory in contemporary culture and seeks to develop a conversation between the ethereal world of technology and the hand-sewn physicality of craft. Her rigorous personal studio practice helps guide her throughout her journey as an arts educator.

Mary Alice Hadley Prize for Visual Art Winner Announced
The Community Foundation of Louisville, in partnership with Louisville Visual Art, is pleased to announce that Louisville-based multi-media artist KCJ Szwedzinski is the winner of the sixth annual Mary Alice Hadley Prize for Visual Art. The $5,000 award is an opportunity for local artists to enhance their careers through a targeted enrichment experience of their own design.
“My most recent body work has been on Jewish memory, identity and legacy," said Szwedzinski. "As an artist, I am continually mindful of who I intend as my audience. I question why it is important for me to make work about Judaism and how my work connects to contemporary issues.”
Szwedzinski will use the award to visit the Jewish Contemporary Museum and the Holocaust Center in San Francisco, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Archives in Washington, D.C., and the Genealogy Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as well as to take a course at the Rare Book School in Philadelphia.
"I believe that the act of remembering is a powerful tool in fostering empathy and breaking barriers of bias," Szwedzinski said. "It's important, now more than ever, to remind people that when true diversity is present in a community is when we all thrive."
Louisville Visual Art will honor KCJ Szwedzinski on Thursday, June 21, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in their Portland gallery at 1538 Lytle Street, 40203. The reception is free and open to the public.
The $5,000 M.A. Hadley Prize is awarded from the George and Mary Alice Hadley Fund at the Community Foundation of Louisville. Focused on the arts and humanities, particularly visual arts, crafts, theater and the Louisville Free Public Library, the endowment has supported our community for more than 25 years.
The Hadley Prize winner is selected through a blind process by a diverse panel of arts professionals from Louisville and the surrounding area. The 2018 prize drew 40 applicants from the greater Louisville area, including Southern Indiana, whose work demonstrated mastery in ceramics, graphic design, drawing, crafts, painting, photography, sculpture, video, film and printmaking.
“Art soothes and calms our collective souls. Art causes us to question and to think. Through the years, art has been used to tell the story of those who came before. The work of KCJ Szwedzinski is powerful and will cause those who see her work to pause and reflect on this horrific period in our history,” said Louisville Visual Art's Executive Director, Lindy Casebier. “Louisville Visual Art is pleased to partner with the Community Foundation of Louisville in support of KCJ's growth as an artist and in turn share that personal growth with others in our community.”
Szwedzinski's itinerary has been designed to fuse personal history and artistic inspiration, "to synthesize seemingly disparate bodies of knowledge - archival practices for historical information and my personal inherited legacies."
“This experience will broaden my ability to make work that is rooted in my own Judaic heritage,” said Szwedzinski, “while facilitating engagement of a more universal audience.”
“It’s important for people to seek to find common ground and part of the way we do this is from remembering our collective history," said Susan Barry, President & CEO of the Community Foundation. "We are pleased the Hadley Prize will support an artist like KCJ, who is using art to begin difficult conversations around the Holocaust, one of the most tragic moments in our history."
The Community Foundation of Louisville believes that art is a vital part of a community where people and places thrive. The Hadley Prize is just one of the ways that the Community Foundation of Louisville supports local artists. Hadley Creatives is the Foundation's six-month comprehensive professional development program for working artists that recently celebrated its inaugural class with an exhibition that is running through July 1 at KMAC.

Novak Center Grand Opening
Fourth and fifth graders from our 2017-18 CFAC program shared their talents and experience with guests at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Novak Center for Children's Health. Art created by CFAC students will be on display in the exam rooms at the Novak Center.

CFAC Elementary School Art Exhibition 2018
Each year, Louisville Visual Art hosts gallery exhibits from our Children's Fine Art Classes (CFAC) program.
Each young artist has work displayed, providing them with an opportunity to see their work in an exhibition and to share that experience with family and friends.
Students have the option to sell their work, with 80% of sales returning to the student and 20% to LVA to provide scholarships for future students.
These are elementary school highlights!
Our guest photographer for this event was Michael Smallwood, a high school student who has studied photography and was recommended by his CFAC teacher.

St. Joseph's Children's Art
Warm weather took students from St. Joseph’s Children’s Home outside during their most recent art workshops with teaching artist Janet Britt. The young artists explored the grounds, observed nature, and hung their delightful bird sculptures in a whimsical installation for all to enjoy!
LVA’s Open Doors program brings meaningful art experiences to students at state agency schools throughout the county. Thanks to the Cralle Foundation and Fund for the Arts for their continued support of these valuable programs!
