Looking Up: Heroes for Today at Metro Hall

"Looking Up: Heroes for Today" is the title of the new art show LVA coordinated at Louisville Metro Hall. Artists Brianna Harlan, Ashley Cathey and Zed Saeed are all on display, and anyone visiting Metro Hall can ask to see their pieces through January 11, 2019.
Zed Saeed is an art and documentary photographer currently working with recent refugees and immigrants that have settled in Kentucky. In Louisville, he connects with these individuals mostly through the Catholic Charities-Migration and Refugee Services. Saeed believes strongly in the power of photography to create connections and to alter perceptions about people, places and things.
Ashley Cathey is a painter whose creative journey began with performing arts before she was eventually encouraged to develop her visual art talents, which, up until then had been purely for her own personal edification, by exhibiting in Chicago before returning to her native Louisville. She came to prominence when ArtsReach commissioned Cathey to create a series of portraits for their annual Keepers of the Dream celebration at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. In 2016 her work was featured on the cover of LEO Weekly as part of an extensive story on artists of color in Louisville.
Brianna Harlan describes herself as, “a mixed media artist that creates Radically Vulnerable art to invite transformative dialogue. Themes of her work include identity, social/cultural dynamics, intimacy, oppression, and self-suppression. Brianna works primarily with participants, inviting them to share and unpack sensitive topics through questions and actions. The discoveries that come from these mindful investigations shape the concept and inform the work's medium. She creates with people, not just about them, and views the process and resulting work as a tool for a moving experience and constructive conversation.

It's a wrap! Art [squared] 2018 was a big success, thanks to the hundreds of artists who donated original pieces to support Children's Fine Art Classes; the hundreds of attendees who saw and/or bought pieces; our staff, board members and volunteers who gave their time, energy and hard work; and everyone else who contributed to this essential fundraiser. Let's do it again next April!

The online-only auction begins on Wednesday, November 15 at noon and ends on Friday, November 17 at 5 p.m.
"Downs After Dark - Bourbon, Bets & Bowties" was held at Churchill Downs on September 23. As a part of that event, 12 Louisville artists used authentic bourbon barrels culled from Kentucky distilleries to create original art! Some painted on them, some built images from thread and wire, and some deconstructed the barrels to fashion wholly unique sculptural forms.
The resulting 12 pieces are being offered for sale - an unusual opportunity for art collectors and bourbon enthusiasts! All proceeds will benefit Louisville Visual Art’s Children’s Fine Art Classes, which reach more than 5,500 students annually all over the Louisville Metro area and surrounding counties, including in Southern Indiana.
Participating artists included Bri Bowers, Adam Horton Art, Bobby Hinkel, Braylyn Resko Stewart, Ewa Perz, John King (DrunkWood), Wood & Twine, Ashleigh Anthony (Art From Ashes), Brandon Harder Art, David Nichols, Branden McClain (Slugger City Sign Company) & Mandi Caskey (Birdy), and Casey Mckinney.

Exhibition: Shayne Hull
"Shaynicus Andronicus," a solo exhibit of Shayne Hull Art’s work, will be on view at Louisville Visual Art during the performances of Kentucky Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus that run October 4 – 31, or by appointment through LVA.
When Shayne Hull turns his sardonic eye to public figures, he joins a great tradition of political satirists. Republican Strategist Karl Rove, President Barack Obama, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have all been subjects, and now, partially inspired by the plot of William Shakespeare’s "Titus Andronicus," Hull offers portraits of “Mobin Andronicus, Sr.,” “Eric Andronicus,” and “Donald Andronicus, Jr.,” wickedly funny caricatures that require no pithy caption for their pointed understanding.

Hull studied painting at Texas A&M and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and earned a Master in Art Education from the University of Louisville. His paintings have been shown regionally, nationally and internationally in over 175 exhibits, including 25 solo shows. His work can be found in the public collections of Brown-Forman, 21C Museum and the Kentucky Arts Council.

An ongoing partnership between Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation and Louisville Visual Art (LVA) now in its third year, Studio 2000 pairs high school students who aspire to be visual artists with professional artists to work in clay, fiber, mixed media and beginning this year, the first-ever mural art track.
Students have been hard at work, under the guidance of artist Casey McKinney, creating a vibrant new mural that is sure to become a beacon in the South Broadway / Smoketown neighborhood.
"Louisville Visual Art is thrilled to collaborate with Metro Parks again this summer to provide an opportunity for these students to work with a teaching artist," said Lindy Casebier, LVA Executive Director. "In doing so, they experience firsthand the power of art to transform lives and neighborhoods."
The program culminates with a celebration of the completion of the Studio 2000 mural at Christ Way Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday, August 6.
Proceeds from the sale are earmarked to support future programming through Studio 2000. The exhibition and sale is your chance to see artwork from 19 up-and-coming local high school artists while supporting an amazing program.
"We are very happy with our partnership with LVA," said Ben Johnson, Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation Assistant Director. "This annual event showcases the talent these young adults possess. We hope people will make it out to see some of their incredible work."

Comic Art with Kevlen Goodner
Illustrator Kevlen Goodner spent a week with our Comic Art summer camp class. Here's what he shared with his Facebook fans:
"I simply cannot say enough about the incredible young people I was privileged to meet and honored to work with at this week's Louisville Visual Art summer camp. I have no doubt that I met with future illustrators whose work will dazzle us in the pages of comics, manga and even animation!
I'm even more proud of the fact that the class was made up predominantly of young women! Their voices will be heard loud and clear, their stories told near and far! Thank you so much to each and every one of them.

The 5th Annual Mary Alice Hadley Prize for Visual Art

The Community Foundation of Louisville, in partnership with Louisville Visual Art, presented Louisville-based artist and printmaker Adrienne Miller with the fifth annual Mary Alice Hadley Prize for Visual Art today at 10 a.m.
The $5,000 award is an opportunity for local artists to enhance their careers through a targeted enrichment experience. Miller will use the prize to research the landscape and art historical influence of the Four Corners area of the American Southwest. The two-week trip will cover close to 2,000 miles in a loop through the Four Corners region and will include a variety of stops, including several different pueblo ruin sites, printmaking studios in Albuquerque, the Georgia O’Keefe museum and archives, several National Parks, energy vortexes in Sedona, and several large earthworks in the region.
“I want the experience to be transformative and immersive so that I come away feeling as though the experience really was a tipping point for me,” said Miller of the Hadley Prize enrichment experience. “I want to return to Louisville renewed to create a whole new body of work.”

“The selection committee was very impressed with Adrienne’s clear artistic vision and the unique nature of her enrichment experience,” said LVA director Lindy Casebier. “Her focus on landscape, both as a part of the American identity and as a driver of her own work, really stood out.”
“The local artists competing for the Hadley Prize continue to impress us with their originality and passion,” said Susan Barry, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Louisville. “While this award focuses on a single artist and a single project, it has the potential to make a much greater impact. By helping Adrienne develop professionally to realize her full potential, she will be empowered to share her gifts with other artists and the Louisville community.”

Painting Lab: Yummy Yummy Yummy
Painting Lab focuses on the young artist who needs the time and space to experiment with the wonders of paint. Students work with a variety of media, including watercolor, acrylic paint, and even house paint! Students also use a variety of surfaces including paper, wood and canvas. Simple compositions will lead to experimentation with various approaches to painting, and students will have the chance to experiment with non-traditional techniques.
This week, our young artists found inspiration in an everyday object of joy: fun food!
