LVA's Artebella On The Radio May 23, 2019

Tammy Burke and Helen Payne, from the current UofL/Hite MFA Graduates Exhibition at Cressman Center will be joining KeithWaits in the studio this week to talk about their work. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM, or stream on Artxfm.com each Thursday at 10am to hear artists speak about their work on LVA's Artebella On The Radio.

Tammy Burke has a MA in Media Communications, Webster University 2008 and a BFA in Painting Herron School of Art, IUPUI Indianapolis 1997. “Thinging”, solo MFA thesis exhibition, Grow West MFA Studios, Portland neighborhood, April 22 to May 3, 2019.   She mounted an installation concurrent with the run of Eurydice, at the U of L Thrust Theater in January 2018, and participated in the Artlink Regional Exhibition, Artlink Contemporary Gallery, Fort Wayne, IN, January through March of 2018. 

Helen Payne was born on Jamestown, RI and was raised in Appalachia.  She’s studied poetry at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics and art at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL and the Maryland Institute, College of Art. Helen’s paintings and drawings have been shown nationally including Fraser Gallery, Washington, DC, Woman-Made Gallery, Chicago, IL, Bromfield Gallery, Boston, MA, Mobius Gallery, Cambridge, MA and the Holzwaser Gallery. Her work is held in many private collections and Governor Gaston Caperton’s West Virginia Collection.

The Hite Art Institute 2019 MFA Graduates Exhibition. Featuring a selection of works from this year’s graduating MFA student’s thesis exhibitions.

2019 MFA Graduates include Lauren Bader, Reid Broadstreet, Tammy Burke, Helen Payne, Monica Stewart and KCJ Szwedzinski.

Sara Cissell will be graduating this upcoming fall 2019 with her BA in Art History and Humanities. Sara has eight years of museum experience formerly working at the Frazier History Museum, and currently the Speed Art Museum. She has interned for the Speed, KMAC, and Sheherazade Gallery. This will be Sara’s first curated show.

Diana Dillman graduated Fall 2018 with her BA in Art History and has interned for the Filson Historical Society and the United States Capitol Visitors Center. Diana currently works at the Kentucky Derby Museum. She has previously curated for the Critical and Curatorial Studies II class with “Caprices: Wit and Whimsy,” which was also at Schneider Hall.

Carrie Donovan is currently the Design manager at The Speed Art Museum. Originally from the Washington, D.C. area, she received her BFA in Communication Art & Design from the University of Louisville. 

The Hite Art Institute is pleased to present “Mental Misconceptions: The Art of Self-Care”, an art exhibition that investigates, comments, and validates the correlation between mental health and the healing process otherwise known as “post-trauma growth.” Post-trauma growth refers to those who have experienced a stronger sense of well-being after a traumatic event. This exhibition solely focuses on local artists and their unique interpretations towards their own self-care and the treatment of others.

“Mental Misconceptions: The Art of Self-Care” features eleven local artists including: Megan Bickel, Jeremy Brightbill, Julio Cesar Rodriguez Aguilar, Andrew and Simon Cozzens, Carrie Donovan, Brianna Harlan, Tammy Richardson, KCJ Szwedzinski, and Letitia Quesenberry.

Charlie Sexton, Artistic Director of Commonwealth Theatre Center, and Dr. Janna Segal, Director of Graduate Studies at UofL’s Department of Theatre Arts, discuss Shakespeare, dramaturgy, and theatre arts education ahead of the 2019 Young American Shakespeare Festival that opens May 9 at CTC. Charlie Sexton is the Artistic Director of Commonwealth Theatre Center. He was among the first class of Conservatory students of Walden Theatre. Charlie’s resume includes many artistic accomplishments as an actor, director, and playwright, but his proudest achievement is the professional training and mentoring of thousands of students through the Walden Conservatory program, the students have been accepted into the nation’s best college theatre programs, including Juilliard, Carnegie Mellon, New York University, Northern Illinois University, and the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater.

Notable students include Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter), Jess Weixler (The Good Wife), Wes Ramsey (Charmed), Tom Graves (The Rude Mechanicals), Gisela Chipe (Asolo Rep’s Hamlet, Prince of Cuba), and Adam Wesley Brown (Once on Broadway).

Dr. Janna Segal teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Louisville in: theatre history, literature, and theory; Shakespeare and Shakespearean adaptation; American feminist theatre; and dramaturgy. Prior to joining the UofL faculty, Dr. Segal was an Assistant Professor in the Theatre Department and in the MLitt/MFA Shakespeare and Performance program at Mary Baldwin College, and an IHUM Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University. She has published single and co-authored works on Shakespeare’s As You Like It, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Othello, and Romeo and Juliet; Dekker and Middleton’s The Roaring Girl; Fo and Rame’s Elisabetta; and Chekhov’s Three Sisters. Her scholarly work has appeared in such journals as SDC Journal, JEMCS, Shakespeare, and Early Modern Literary Studies, as well as in numerous anthologies, including the forthcoming Performances at Court in Shakespeare’s Era (Rowman and Littlefield, 2018) and How to Teach a Play (Bloomsbury, 2018). Dr. Segal is also a freelance dramaturg whose past production work includes Shakespeare, Shakespearean adaptation, contemporary theatre, and new plays in development. She is the Resident Dramaturg of the Comparative Drama Conference, for which she dramaturgs two to three new plays a year, and a dramaturg for ATHE’s annual New Play Development Workshop. At UofL, she has dramaturged Baltimore,Eurydice, and The Master and Margarita, and The Taming of the Shrew. She has also worked locally as a guest dramaturg for Commonwealth Theatre Center. Dr. Segal is a member of Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA), and she serves on the Board of the Comparative Drama Conference.

Dr. Catherine Fosl is a Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and founding Director of the Anne Braden Institute. Dr. Fosl was Anne Braden’s biographer and is the author of Subversive Southerner: Anne Braden and the Struggle for Racial Justice in the Cold War South (Palgrave Macmillan, 2002), as well as other books.

Carla Wallace is a civil rights activist in Louisville, Ky. She is co-founder of the Fairness Campaignand Showing Up for Racial Justice and a member of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights Hall of Fame

Chris Reitz is Assistant Professor of Critical and Curatorial Studies and Gallery Director at the Hite Art Institute. His research focuses on transnational practices in art and exhibitions of the past 30 years, with a particular emphasis on art and the art market in the era of neoliberalism.

Jessica Oberdick is a visual artist, curator, and writer. She has contributed to various online platforms including Burnaway and Ruckus Louisville, and was recently published in the international magazine Boshemia. She has curated + co-curated exhibitions at 1619 Flux and KMAC Museum, both in Louisville, and currently is the Exhibitions Assistant for the Hite Institute for Visual Art at the University of Louisville.

Jo Anne Triplett is a contributing arts editor at LEO Weekly. She’s a past member of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Public Art, was the content advisor on the Glassworks Building video, and has written for Louisville Magazine, Kentucky Homes and Gardens and the national publication Glass Craftsman. Jo Anne came to Louisville from Washington, D.C. where she worked as a researcher and writer for the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Jessica Oberdick is a visual artist, curator, and writer. In December 2017 Oberdick graduated from the University of Louisville with her dual Master of Arts and Art History in Critical and Curatorial Studies and Master of Public Administration in Nonprofit Management. LVA's Artebella On The Radio November 8, 2018

Sue Eng Ly and JoAnne Sweeney are my guests on tomorrow morning's LVA's Artebella On The Radio. They will tell us about "What Were You Wearing: A Survivor's Installation", an exhibit U of L's Brandeis School of Law. Tune in each Thursday at 10am to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com.

JoAnne Sweeny teaches Lawyering Skills and Writing For Practice. Prior to coming to Louisville, she was a Westerfield Fellow at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law where she taught legal research and writing as well as a seminar in comparative constitutional law.

Professor Sweeny's current scholarly interests include comparative constitutional law, freedom of expression, law and gender, and legal history. Some of Professor Sweeny's most recent research has focused the present and historical criminalization of consensual sex, such as the prosecution of teenagers under child pornography laws because they have "sexted" each other nude or erotic photos of themselves. Her comparative work focuses on the United Kingdom’s Human Rights Act and the European Convention on Human Rights.

Sue Eng Ly joined the community at Brandeis School of Law in August 2016. Prior to law school, she spent three years with the AmeriCorps program, serving as a middle school teacher in Hartford, Conn., a volunteer manager in Boston and a small business program coordinator in Louisville. She is deeply passionate about social justice and empowering those who are marginalized. As a Human Rights Fellow, she hopes to be more connected to Louisville’s refugees and immigrants and gain a better understanding of their struggles. Some of Sue Eng’s hobbies include baking, singing, journaling and giving people hugs.

“What Were You Wearing.” The event will be the opening of an art installation about sexual assault survivors and it will showcase their stories through the actual clothes they were wearing when they were violated. It will take place on Saturday, November 10, 2018, beginning with an opening speech at 5:00pm at the Student Activities Center.

Jordan Clark, Lee Mai, & Abbie Springer of Cirque Louis were with us in the studio July 19. They will be performing at iroquois Amphitheatre on July 20 & 21 as a part of the Amphitheatre's 80th Birthday Celebration! Jordan Clark was first taken to see the circus by his grandparents. From there, a fascination of the circus and its characters began to grow. The circus was a place where Jordan’s childlike imagination could manifest into a tangible experience. After training on his own in high school, Jordan began his formal circus training in 2006 at the National Circus School of Montreal’s summer program. He was later accepted into the school’s prestigious college program where he completed his training in 2012. Jordan has performed his hand-balancing act in over 20 countries as well as at sea.

Lee Mai is a Juggler and circus enthusiast who is one of CirqueLouis’ most consummate and active performers. He is a regular fixture at CirqueLouis’ city wide events and productions, playing a Vaudeville star in Bootleg “Untapped” (2015) and Puck in “A Midsummer Night’s Circus” (2016) and major roles in Pinocchio (2016), East of the Sun (2017), and Kaleidoscope (2017). In addition to performing, Lee is also an instructor for CirqueLouis’ educational outreach and Social Circus program. Beyond circus, Lee enjoys food, good conversation, kindness, and cheesy sci-fi.

Abbie Springer grew up in Kansas City, Mo, but moved to Louisville to compete with the nationally ranked University of Louisville cheerleading squad and in 2009, she began her circus arts training. Abbie has trained extensively in doubles acts and apparatus (Acro, Adagio, Trapeze, Chandelyra, and Sphere). She has trained on Silks, Aerial Rope, Lyra and completed her instructional training through NECCA (New England Center for Circus Arts). Abbie has performed in CirqueLouis’ previous productions of Bootleg “Untapped” (2015), A Midsummer Night’s Circus (2016), Pinocchio (2016), East of the Sun (2017), and Kaleidoscope (2017).

Novak Center Grand Opening

Fourth and fifth graders from our 2017-18 CFAC program shared their talents and experience with guests at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Novak Center for Children's Health. Art created by CFAC students will be on display in the exam rooms at the Novak Center.
