Painting Lab students worked with a variety of media including watercolor, acrylic paint, and even house paint! Instructor Jackie taught this group to make geli prints, including mono prints.

Simple compositions lead to experimentation with various approaches to painting, and students experimented with non-traditional techniques. Creations came to life with quality materials and a little imagination!

Comic Art with Kevlen Goodner

Illustrator Kevlen Goodner spent a week with our Comic Art summer camp class. Here's what he shared with his Facebook fans:

"I simply cannot say enough about the incredible young people I was privileged to meet and honored to work with at this week's Louisville Visual Art summer camp. I have no doubt that I met with future illustrators whose work will dazzle us in the pages of comics, manga and even animation!

I'm even more proud of the fact that the class was made up predominantly of young women! Their voices will be heard loud and clear, their stories told near and far! Thank you so much to each and every one of them.

Thank you to the parents and loved ones who continue to encourage and inspire them to reach their creative goals. And thank you to LVA for the invitation to share in this beautiful experience. Support your local art organizations! These are our neighbors dedicating their lives to enriching ours. Thank you a million/billion times over to the awesome Jacqueliine Pallesen and the amazing Annette Cable! You guys are Rock Stars in the truest since of the words ;)

See you soon

Studio 2000: A Very Full Week!

Studio 2000 had a very full week! Mural students made great progress despite the heat; fiber students went wild with Japanese shibori dyeing; ceramic students dove into wheel-throwing; mixed media students began creating custom skateboard decks; and Tuesday found us all trekking around visiting artists' studios at Hope Mills, Hound Dog Press and Art Sanctuary. Whew! We are exhausted and inspired!

Studio 2000: Batiks, 2D and Ceramics

Studio 2000 allows high school students who are interested in pursuing visual art as a career to have the opportunity to work with professional artists in clay, fiber, mixed media, and mural art while also receiving a $500 stipend at the end of the eight-week session. The program culminates with a public exhibition and sale at the end of the summer that brings proceeds back to Studio 2000 to support future programming. Studio 2000 is a partnership between Louisville Metro Parks and LVA.

This week, students at the Shawnee Arts and Cultural Center enjoy working on ceramics, 2D art and Batiks.

The Batik process is a wax-resist dyeing technique that is traditional in several different cultures, mostly in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. The textiles that this group is making will be used to create "functional" items - book covers for handmade books, pillow cases, tote bags, etc.

The 2D group's emphasis is on printmaking, but they will also be creating primarily functional things - printing on greeting cards, t-shirts, totebags, skateboard decks and more.

Painting Lab: Yummy Yummy Yummy

Painting Lab focuses on the young artist who needs the time and space to experiment with the wonders of paint. Students work with a variety of media, including watercolor, acrylic paint, and even house paint! Students also use a variety of surfaces including paper, wood and canvas. Simple compositions will lead to experimentation with various approaches to painting, and students will have the chance to experiment with non-traditional techniques.

This week, our young artists found inspiration in an everyday object of joy: fun food!
