Snowy Owl
At LVA's CFAC program at Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve, we have access to many specimens from which to draw. We recently finished up our first project of the semester: a Snowy Owl drawn on black Bristol board with white charcoal pencils.
Snowy owls have been migrating farther south for the last few years and have been seen as far south as central Kentucky. This project challenged the students on proportions, composition, and drawing accuracy. Planning ahead was vital as some areas needed to be left black.
They learned a valuable lesson of allowing the toned paper to do some of the work for them and they also learned a lot about this majestic bird.

Balance
4th & 5th-grade CFAC students at King Elementary studied balance with instructor Julia. Students were allowed to use whatever medium they wanted but had to make a design that had a radial or symmetrical balance.

Matisse and Mod Podge
CFAC students in grades 7-8 at Shelby West Middle School learned about the life of Henri Matisse, and then created their own collage bowls in the style of the artist.

Unicorn Frappes
CFAC 4-6 graders at Grant Line Elementary in New Albany, in., worked with acrylic paint on canvas board to make these Unicorn Frappes! Seth especially enjoyed his!
It was a lesson in learning blending, brush control, and creating space by overlapping subject matter.

LVA joined Mayor Greg Fischer, Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith, Metro Public Art Administrator Sarah Lindgren, Metro Parks and a large crowd of friends and supporters at Metro Hall on Monday, January 29.
LVA coordinates exhibitions of local artists at Metro Hall, so on this night all gathered to pay tribute to artists CJ Pressma, Jenny Zeller, and Mitch Eckert. Also saluted were the participants of our summer program Picture Love, a partnership between LVA and Metro Parks that returns this summer!
Making Masks
We’ve been having a wild time at Field Elementary School making masks with the third grade! These creative students used wood, plaster, paint, and embellishments to create these whimsical works!

Company OutCast is a theatrical and film-making group that emphasizes transparency and collaboration in its creative process, including writing, producing and casting decisions. It aims to produce bold, largely experimental works using inclusive, nontraditional casting with an focus on works that break gender, sexuality and race barriers in theater and film. Polina Shafran, Rachel Allen, Caitlin Clemons, & Marcy Ziegler, joined us in the studio Jan. 25 to talk about this ambitious initiative. Kentucky Opera announces LVA collaboration
LVA Executive Director Lindy Casebier joined the Kentucky Opera, including director Ian Derrer, as they announced their 2018-2019 season at the Brown Theatre on January 16 (and featured live performances from upcoming productions).
Casebier was there to announce an Opera poster competition that LVA will be working on. Stay tuned for more details!
