Recognizing educators and patrons alongside artists, the Louisville Visual Art Honors embrace the entire ecosystem of visual culture, every part of which enhances the prominence, quality, and purposes of Art in our visually vibrant city. Last year’s Honorees will present the Awards to this year’s Honorees, a demonstration of the intergenerational connections necessary to keep art alive in Louisville.

 The annual OPEN STUDIO WEEKEND is a landmark event when artists across the Louisville Metro open their work spaces to the public. It’s a prime opportunity for fans, collectors, fellow artists, or those just curious about Louisville’s bustling scene to get behind-the-scenes views of creative processes, learn about new artists in the area, and take advantage of studio sales where available. For participating artists, it’s a wonderful way to connect with new audiences, inspire young visitors, and share deeper significance of how and why they make what they make. Louisville Visual Art and the University of Louisville Hite Art Institute partner to develop the roster of artists and create a comprehensive Directory that maps the studio locations and provides information on all participants. The Directory serves as a ticket to OPEN STUDIO WEEKEND, and is prized in the community as an invaluable guide to Louisville’s art scene. Participating artists are eligible to submit work to a juried exhibition that kicks off OPEN STUDIO WEEKEND at the UofL’s Cressman Center downtown.

Open Studio Weekend 2018

Open Studio Weekend (OSW) is a partnership of LVA and the University of Louisville's Hite Art Institute to raise funds for LVA's signature program, Children's Fine Art Classes, and the Hite Art Institute's Mary Spencer Nay Scholarship program.

More than 100 artists all over Louisville open their doors to the public once a year for Open Studio Weekend! This event is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in art - on any level - to see artists at work, get a glimpse into their process, and in some cases, take advantage of studio sales. It's also a fun way to discover new favorites. Visitors create their own self-guided tour using the printed, downloadable or mobile-friendly directory. Whether you're a fan, a collector, a fellow artist or just starting to explore this bustling scene, Open Studio Weekend is a very exciting way to celebrate Louisville's creative community.

Louisville Waterfront Fourth!

Celebrate the Fourth with music, fireworks and family fun!

The family-friendly Louisville Waterfront Fourth celebration will open at 5 p.m. with a variety of activities produced by popular arts and cultural attractions in the Catfish Louie Kids Area. The activities will be nestled in the shade of the trees near the Children’s Playground and will appeal to a variety of interests – Science, Music, Art, and Nature! There will also be a large area devoted to engaging with our community helpers. Families can meet our first responders, firefighters and police officers who will have special equipment on display.

Kentucky Science Center will provide science activities and demonstrations.
WUOL Youth Stage, hosted by Jecorey Arthur
National Jug Band Jubilee will provide music education activities by helping children create their own musical instruments, which they can use to join in a jug band performance! 
DrumSmart LLC will engage community members of all ages and abilities in a drum circle that will make you feel refreshed, creative, and full of energy.
Louisville Visual Art and Steam Exchange art activities for children. 
Waterfront Botanical Gardens nature activities, lawn games, pony rides and a petting farm!
Other new attractions for 2018 include the Kentucky Derby Museum, One Love Louisville, and the Mayor's Office for Safe & Healthy Neighborhoods. 
Louisville Metro Police Department and Louisville Fire Dept. will have a helicopter and other safety equipment on display for children and families. These activities will occur from 5-9 p.m. and are completely free.

The Community Foundation of Louisville, in partnership with Louisville Visual Art, is pleased to announce that Louisville-based multi-media artist KCJ Szwedzinski is the winner of the sixth annual Mary Alice Hadley Prize for Visual Art. The $5,000 award is an opportunity for local artists to enhance their careers through a targeted enrichment experience of their own design.

Louisville Visual Art will honor KCJ Szwedzinski on Thursday, June 21, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in their Portland gallery at 1538 Lytle Street, 40203. The reception is free and open to the public.

“My most recent body work has been on Jewish memory, identity and legacy," said Szwedzinski. "As an artist, I am continually mindful of who I intend as my audience. I question why it is important for me to make work about Judaism and how my work connects to contemporary issues.”

Szwedzinski will use the award to visit the Jewish Contemporary Museum and the Holocaust Center in San Francisco, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Archives in Washington, D.C., and the Genealogy Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as well as to take a course at the Rare Book School in Philadelphia.

"I believe that the act of remembering is a powerful tool in fostering empathy and breaking barriers of bias," Szwedzinski said. "It's important, now more than ever, to remind people that when true diversity is present in a community is when we all thrive."

The $5,000 M.A. Hadley Prize is awarded from the George and Mary Alice Hadley Fund at the Community Foundation of Louisville. Focused on the arts and humanities, particularly visual arts, crafts, theater and the Louisville Free Public Library, the endowment has supported our community for more than 25 years.

The Hadley Prize winner is selected through a blind process by a diverse panel of arts professionals from Louisville and the surrounding area. The 2018 prize drew 40 applicants from the greater Louisville area, including Southern Indiana, whose work demonstrated mastery in ceramics, graphic design, drawing, crafts, painting, photography, sculpture, video, film and printmaking.

“Art soothes and calms our collective souls. Art causes us to question and to think. Through the years, art has been used to tell the story of those who came before. The work of KCJ Szwedzinski is powerful and will cause those who see her work to pause and reflect on this horrific period in our history,” said Louisville Visual Art's Executive Director, Lindy Casebier. “Louisville Visual Art is pleased to partner with the Community Foundation of Louisville in support of KCJ's growth as an artist and in turn share that personal growth with others in our community.”

Szwedzinski's itinerary has been designed to fuse personal history and artistic inspiration, "to synthesize seemingly disparate bodies of knowledge - archival practices for historical information and my personal inherited legacies."

“This experience will broaden my ability to make work that is rooted in my own Judaic heritage,” said Szwedzinski, “while facilitating engagement of a more universal audience.”

“It’s important for people to seek to find common ground and part of the way we do this is from remembering our collective history," said Susan Barry, President & CEO of the Community Foundation. "We are pleased the Hadley Prize will support an artist like KCJ, who is using art to begin difficult conversations around the Holocaust, one of the most tragic moments in our history."

The Community Foundation of Louisville believes that art is a vital part of a community where people and places thrive. The Hadley Prize is just one of the ways that the Community Foundation of Louisville supports local artists. Hadley Creatives is the Foundation's six-month comprehensive professional development program for working artists that recently celebrated its inaugural class with an exhibition that is running through July 1 at KMAC.

Stop by Louisville Visual Art for a Kentucky Refugee Ministries pop-up event honoring local and international art across our city! This event is part of the We Create World Refugee Week Festival.

FESTIVAL:
The We Create: World Refugee Week Festival is hosted by KRM as a culmination of an arts program called, 'We Create: Artists and Refugees Celebrate Making Louisville Home.' Each year, World Refugee Day is recognized internationally on June 20.

ARTISTS:
Over 20 local artists will showcase their work at events throughout the week. Their work is inspired by refugee stories from KRM. Other artists include KRM alum and KRM Live performers. Stay tuned for a list of artists at each pop-up showcase.

ENTRY:
All of the pop-up events are ticketless and open to the public. No RSVP is needed. Donations are welcome.

This thrilling and vital fundraising event is held annually in early spring. More than 200 artists create 12" x 12" works of art for the art[squared] exhibition & sale, which will be available for $125 each. All artists will remain anonymous until the squares are purchased - once a piece is sold, the artist's name will be revealed. Proceeds from art[squared] support Children's Fine Art Classes (CFAC).

How art[squared] works...

More than 200 paintings line the walls of the LVA Gallery. Each piece is priced at $125 and signed on the back, leaving the front anonymous. The beauty of an anonymous exhibition is viewers will be able to respond to the artwork on its merits alone, without prejudice or preference.

The exhibition is unseen by the public until the doors open. Guests have 30 minutes to browse the artwork and seek out their favorites. All works will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. As each piece is sold, the buyer learns the identity of the artist, and a placard with the selling artist's name will replace the artwork on the wall.

All proceeds benefit CFAC, which educates more than 1,000 artistically talented and visually driven children annually in the Greater Louisville area. This provides students with scholarships and helps offset instructor and supply costs in all 12 participating Kentuckiana counties.

Vinhay Keo is originally from Cambodia, where he spent his first 10 years. He earned his BFA from the Kentucky College of Art + Design at Spalding University. A Great Meadows Foundation recipient, he received the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship to study at Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art and participated in workshops such as Anderson Ranch Art Center and Anne West’s writing reflection. His work has been exhibited throughout galleries in Louisville, with a recent solo exhibition at Moremen Moloney Contemporary Gallery. That exhibit, Confront, was one of the more important exhibits of 2017, a commentary that spoke to the chaos in American society, the worth and importance of the immigrant in that chaos, and the very core value of diversity that lies at the heart of the United States of America.

Wilma Bethel graduated with a BFA from Morehead State University in 1971 and received her MAT in Art Education from the University of Louisville in 1975. She taught with JCPS at Crosby Middle School from 1971-2012 and Bellarmine University from 2008-2012. For Louisville Visual Art, she has taught in our CFAC program since 1973! Her goals as a teacher have always been for her students to take away an appreciation of the different genres of art. Through the use of different mediums, she imparts knowledge of the elements and principles of art and design, and the confidence to discover each young artists' creative potential.


Benefactor of the Year Award - Porter Watkins

Porter Watkins is a Louisville native who inherited a strong sense of community involvement and philanthropy from her family. Her Grandmother, Nora Iasigi Bullitt, was President of the Ladies' Auxiliary in 1913, and her uncle, Eugene “Bud” Leake, was for a decade the director of The Art Center (now know as Louisville Visual Art). Porter was a precocious child whose upbringing was a mix of the rural and the urban, characterized by adventures on horseback up and down Lime Kiln Lane and exposure to an arts and culture scene experiencing tremendous growth. Porter and her husband, George Bailey, follow their passion when it comes to the arts, and Porter put her “time, talent, and treasure” to work for several organizations over many, many years, serving on the boards of Louisville Visual Art, Sister Cities of Louisville, English Speaking Union, The Zoo, Kentucky to the World and YouthBuild-Louisville, and she has been significantly involved with Food Literacy Project at Oxmoor Farm and has recently taken an interest in the Waterfront Botanical Garden.

 

Legacy Award - Elmer Lucille Allen

Elmer Lucille Allen, born in Louisville, Kentucky, is a ceramic artist and chemist who graduated from Nazareth College (now Spalding University) in 1953. She became the first African-American chemist at Brown-Forman in 1966. Allen retired from Brown-Forman in 1997, after which she devoted more time to her art. Starting in 1981 she began to study art at the University of Louisville, receiving her Masters of Creative Arts with a focus in ceramics and fiber in 2002. Allen's textile work incorporates Japanese Shibori dyeing techniques. She states, "When I rented my first studio in 2005 at Mellwood, I knew that I was truly an artist." In 2011 Allen's work was included in the show Powering Creativity: Air, Fuel, Heat at the Carnegie Center for Art and History in New Albany, Indiana. Allen's work was part of the 2016 Women's Artist Exhibition: The African Heritage Experience at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage.

The online-only auction begins on Wednesday, November 15 at noon and ends on Friday, November 17 at 5 p.m.

"Downs After Dark - Bourbon, Bets & Bowties" was held at Churchill Downs on September 23. As a part of that event, 12 Louisville artists used authentic bourbon barrels culled from Kentucky distilleries to create original art! Some painted on them, some built images from thread and wire, and some deconstructed the barrels to fashion wholly unique sculptural forms.

The resulting 12 pieces are being offered for sale - an unusual opportunity for art collectors and bourbon enthusiasts! All proceeds will benefit Louisville Visual Art’s Children’s Fine Art Classes, which reach more than 5,500 students annually all over the Louisville Metro area and surrounding counties, including in Southern Indiana.

Participating artists included Bri Bowers, Adam Horton Art, Bobby Hinkel, Braylyn Resko Stewart, Ewa Perz, John King (DrunkWood), Wood & Twine, Ashleigh Anthony (Art From Ashes), Brandon Harder Art, David Nichols, Branden McClain (Slugger City Sign Company) & Mandi Caskey (Birdy), and Casey Mckinney.

The goal is to deepen our relationship with the community while simultaneously supporting local talented artists. OSW expands cultural and economic opportunities for artists and art lovers alike.

This event is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who appreciates art - from enthusiasts to collectors - to see artists at work, get a glimpse into the process of making art, and in some cases, take advantage of studio sales. The 4th Annual PAHF Juried Exhibition is a juried exhibition in conjunction with the Portland Art and Heritage Fair and will be on view at the LVA gallery in Portland, Saturday, September 9, 2017 from 11am-5pm. The awards ceremony will be held at 2pm.

The exhibition is part of the Portland Art & Heritage Fair and a production of Portland, Now! The exhibition will be held at the LVA Gallery, 1538 Lytle Street, Louisville, Kentucky.

Baseball Flags: New Work by Patrick Donley

Join us for hors d’oeuvres, music, cocktails, and new artwork from Louisville artist, Patrick Donley. Patrick Donley is a longtime member of the Louisville art community who has made his reputation with his colorful, collage-based abstract paintings, compositions composed of spherical objects applied with an insistent mark-making technique. His new work explores the global connection with the game of baseball with flags serving as the visual starting point. 


"This series began as an excuse to use the imagery of America’s Game in my art. For years, I have been fascinated by the gritty, rugged, glorious, and often tarnished visual lexicon of baseball, a game full of heroes, heroines, legends, myths, successes and failures. It fascinates me that although Soccer is the 'World’s' game, Baseball has 'the World Series', and now, for me, that phrase finally makes a little more sense."

Opening Reception: October 7th, 6:30pm

The Backside Learning Center, Louisville Visual Art, and Louisville Story Program invite the public to join them at the ReSurfaced Liberty Build on Friday, Oct. 7 beginning at 6:30 p.m. for the opening of The View from Back Here: snapshots and memories from the backside of the track. 

This is the culminating exhibit of a summer photography and oral history program for youth and young adults in the backside community who expressed interest in the documentary disciplines. Guided by instructors from LSP and LVA and made possible with a grant from UPS, they learned the fundamentals of photography and were trained in the objectives and techniques of taking oral history. They photographed many aspects of daily life on the track and conducted personal interviews with community and family members. Some of the participants are the children of equine workers on the backside of Churchill Downs, others work on the backside themselves. Together they have captured a brief, vibrant glimpse into the lives and stories lived every day on the backside of the track. The exhibit will run throughout the month of October, Thursdays and Fridays 5-10 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m.
